Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have urged the state government led by Emeka Ihedioha to make the payment of pensions regular in the state.

NLC Chairman Austin Chilapku made the plea in Owerri yesterday, following the commencement of payment of pension arrears by the state government on Thursday.

Chilakpu said by ensuring the regularity in payment, the governor would surmount a problem that had dogged previous administrations in the state.

The chairman said: “We appeal to Governor Ihedioha to sustain the prompt payment and ensure that pensioners continue to receive their pensions alongside workers of the state.”

He said that would ensure enhanced productivity of workers as well as further portray the government as one with genuine concern for the welfare of the citizens.

Chilapku commended Ihedioha for keeping to his promise of tackling the pension issue in the state, stressing that, “at least the pensioners in Imo can now heave a sign of relief.

TUC chairman, Comrade Nkim Tangban, while reacting to the issue of variations noticed in the payment, expressed optimism that it would soon be resolved.

He said a register has been opened at pension offices across the state to take record of complaints relating to the payment with a view to addressing them.
