Lack of improved seedlings, funding affect cashew production

This was contained in a communiqué signed by the group’s National Vice president, Alhaji Ichapi, after a 3-day workshop organised for cashew growers and processors by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Kabba, Kogi state.
The group said aside improved seedlings and inadequate financial support, lack of harvesting facilities, poor marketing outlets and absence of factory for cashew processing in the country are other challenges facing cashew growers and processors in the country.
The communiqué said passive attention is being given to cashew growers and processors, noting that other commodities like cocoa, cassava and palm trees are being given financial and other support by the government.
They said the workshop was timely as it would serve as a wakeup call for stakeholders concerned with cashew commodity product, adding that it would also increase the awareness of participants on various cashew products available and how they can improve their yield.
According to the communiqué, state and local government should be encouraged to join hands with private entrepreneurs in the establishment of factories for the production of various cashew products.
