Author and publisher of Clever Clogs Books, Olubunmi Aboderin Talabi has revealed that inadequate local contents in many children books in Nigeria inspired her decision to write and publish a collection of books for the young ones.

Talabi made this disclosure at the launch of her Nigerian-themed children picture books in Lagos.

The author expressed regrets that many of the books available for children in the country are majorly those from different countries of the world and they depict the cultures and values of the countries where they originate from.

“The books interprets foreign world and promote foreign values to the children leaving their indigenous values at a jeopardized state. Nigeria is not lacking in literary talents, yet books depicting values and the culture of our people, especially for the children are not easy to come by. They are not as easy to find or available as foreign books.

“Interestingly, the urge to have Nigerian-themed children books has been on for many years. I can say it is now at its peak and this actually inspired my decision to write and launch the new series of children books so as to intervene in the empty space of the Nigerian book industry.

“As a writer and publisher, I can say I understand the environment and that is why I often advocate that history must be taught and related to the children for better understanding of the country,” Talabi said.

According to the publisher, the target audience for the book series are children, hence her decision to feature colourful illustrations. 

“The books we are launching have their messages. For instance, Tobi Visits the Conservatory is an adventurous story that happens around the children to help them get familiar with their country. 

“Also, Kob the Antelope depicts African culture. The story which is set in a West African Savanna teaches the children the importance of following the advice of a trusted parent over the flattery of a stranger. The book which engages images familiar to the children illustrates the need for the children to be conscious about their environment and also teaches them to show a good balance in developing a healthy reading culture.

“Dairy of a Toddler on its part is an engaging routine for a child. The book introduces the concept of time and sequencing to preschoolers using bright colourful illustrations that tell the story of a little Nigerian girl and her daily adventures,” Talabi said.
