Lack of mentorship can have far-reaching security implication for society, says a law academic, Professor Shehu Abdullahi.

Prof. Abdullahi attributed this to the place of mentorship as the cornerstone of the survival of human progress and civilisation.

He made the assertion in a lecture on mentorship delivered at the investiture ceremony of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, FCT chapter, in Abuja recently.

Citing scholars of sociology on the Boko Haram insurgency, he said hate ideology among the “people excluded them from the benefits of human progress and civilisation.”

Prof. Abdullahi, who is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta State, blamed the poor mentoring culture in Africa on the fear of competition and the mentor being run out of prominence.

“This is mostly true in Africa, where mentors make conscious decisions with a dangerous determination that persons under their tutorship must be suppressed and must not be as good as they are or better than them. Therefore, as a matter of deliberate attitude, benefactees are never mentored with sincerity of purpose and hence not enable to realise their full potentials,” he said.

He, therefore, charged the institute to ingrain the virtues of mentorship in the curriculum for the training of members before they were given  positions of responsibility.

The programme witnessed the investiture of NIQS FCT chapter with Otaru J. Omokhagbo as the new chairman of the institute by the former Chairman, Isaretin Okoro.
