Lack of research institute hampering growth of Nigeria’s democracy – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that lack of a research institute is hampering the strengthening of democracy in the country.

PDP’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, stated this Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI) establishment committee.

Addressing members of the committee and other party stakeholders present, Damagum said the party was committed to making the PDI “a hub that can do a lot of research that can develop our democracy within the party and country at large. Ours is to put it on a sound footing so that at least it can help in the development of democracy in Nigeria and beyond.”

Addressing newsmen after the inauguration, the Deputy National Chairman (South) and Chairman of the committee, Taofeek Arapaja, said there were many gaps in terms of how democracy worked among members of parties and Nigeria.

“We need to develop the capacity of these people, and by doing that you will deepen democracy in Nigeria; that is the gap that the PDI is expected to fill,” he said.
