The fallouts of last Saturday’s boat mishap in Lagos are now sinking in. The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) community in Ikorodu is presently in mourning as it has been confirmed that two of its students were involved in the tragedy.
The two students, both females, were said to have left Ikorodu to travel to Ajah on board the ill-fated boat on the fateful day. While one of the students died in the mishap that claimed the lives of seven persons, the other was severely injurd and is presently being treated in the hospital.
The affected students were Monisola Dawodu who was in National Diploma (ND) 2, studying Hospitality and Management Technology. She died in the mishap. Her friend, Atinuke Ayebo, was in ND 3, studying Mass Communication (Part-Time). She was rescued alive and was immediately taken to the General Hospital, Ikorodu alongside other survivors.
 The two friends were said to have left their abode in the vicinity of the campus to visit Atinuke’s friend in Ajah when the tragedy occurred. The boat conveying them alongside 15 other passengers and the boat operator and his assistant capsized after hitting a log right inside the deep waters. The boat was heading for the Badore Jetty in Ajah, but the accident happened soon after the vehicle left Ijede, a suburb of Ikorodu.
There were tears on the faces of Monisola’s fellow students on Monday when she was buried at the Sabo Cemetery in Ikorodu. Many of the students bemoaned the tragedy that had befallen their colleague. They asked the Lagos State government to act urgently and drastically to stop the frequent targic boat mishaps on the Lagos waterways.
 Meanwhile, Eko Trust learnt that Atinuke has been moved from the General Hospital, Ikorodu by her parents, to an undisclosed hospital for the purpose of receiving better and adequate treatment.
