Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, who treated the judges to a state reception, said the state takes pride in celebrating those who have excelled and served Lagos very well.
Speaking about the retired Chief Judge, Justice Ayo Philips and her succeeding sister, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, Governor Fashola explained that the two siblings who have taken leadership of the judiciary in the state did so purely on merit and not by patronage.
The governor also said that from the small corner of Nigeria which Lagos occupies, the strong message that is being sent out is that all is not lost in the country adding, “the state has a judiciary that is not corrupt.”
He stressed further that as Lagos celebrates these women, “the state is also sending out a message to our nation that in this state and city, our integrity is more valuable to us than all our personal assets. We are building a public service that our children would be proud to inherit from us and they can one day look back and say thank you for leaving this type of legacy for us.”
Earlier in his address, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, had described the occasion as an auspicious one for Lagos State as two distinguished judges were being celebrated.
Ipaye added that the swearing in of Justice Oluwafunmilayo Olajumoke Atilade as the fifth female Chief Judge of Lagos was for various reasons of historical significance because for one, Lagos is now the only state that has had female Chief Judges back to back for five years.
In a message of goodwill, a Supreme Court Judge, Mr.  Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, said though Justice Ayo Philips is a retired Chief Judge of Lagos, her achievements remain clear as she performed greatly.
He added that her sister, the incumbent chief judge, would similarly be a great success in Lagos State and that at the end of it all, the state governor would see that his choice of both of them was God sent.
