In a major boost to Nigeria’s trade facilitation drive and industrial competitiveness, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has approved the activation of a dedicated “Green Channel” linking the Lekki Deep Sea Port directly to the Lagos Free Zone (LFZ), creating what stakeholders describe as a first-of-its-kind seamless cargo corridor in the country.

The approval allows for the controlled and expedited movement of Free Zone cargo straight from the port to the zone without the traditional delays associated with port exits, multiple checkpoints and extended truck dwell times.

With the development, Lagos Free Zone becomes the first and only free trade zone in Nigeria to operate a Customs-sanctioned green channel, a logistics model commonly deployed in leading global trade hubs across the Middle East and Asia.

For years, manufacturers and logistics operators have cited congestion, demurrage charges, and prolonged clearance processes at Nigerian ports as key constraints to growth. The new corridor aims to eliminate these pain points by enabling what officials describe as a “port-to-factory” cargo movement system.

Under the arrangement, consignments destined for the Lagos Free Zone will move through a dedicated and monitored route directly from the Lekki Deep Sea Port into the zone, bypassing traditional exit procedures that often create delays.

The result, according to operators, is faster cargo turnaround, lower logistics costs and improved supply chain predictability.

Businesses within the zone are expected to benefit from shorter delivery timelines and reduced capital tied up in storage and truck waiting times — factors that typically erode margins and disrupt production schedules.

Despite the faster movement, authorities say the system will maintain strict compliance and security.

Every shipment passing through the green channel will be covered by continuous surveillance and digital monitoring tools, including 24/7 CCTV coverage, telemetry tracking and tamper-evident logging systems designed to preserve cargo integrity and ensure real-time Customs visibility.

The Nigeria Customs Service said the initiative strikes a balance between trade facilitation and regulatory control.

“This approval is a testament to our commitment to trade modernization,” said the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, adding, “The Lagos Free Zone Green Channel will enhance Customs visibility while significantly improving investor confidence in Nigeria’s Special Economic Zones.”

He added that the integration demonstrates how technology and policy reforms can simplify trade processes without compromising national security or revenue collection.

The Lagos Free Zone holds a unique position as the only Nigerian free zone with the Lekki Deep Sea Port as its anchor tenant, giving it direct physical and operational proximity to one of the country’s most modern maritime gateways.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lagos Free Zone, Mrs. Adesuwa Ladoja, described the development as a turning point for ease of doing business in the zone.

“The activation of the Lagos Free Zone Green Channel is the latest testament to our customer-centricity and our commitment to continually deliver enhanced ease of doing business for our tenants,” she said.

According to her, the system effectively removes the long-standing “last mile” logistics uncertainty that has historically complicated port operations in Nigeria.

“Our tenants no longer need to navigate the complexities of traditional port exits,” Ladoja said. “Instead, they benefit from a high-velocity, Customs-integrated corridor that moves cargo with precision and speed. This is a gamechanger for manufacturing and regional distribution.”
