The Oba of Ijanikin, Oba Momodu Afolabi Ashafa joined operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Unit Commander 2.112, Lagos, to flag off the ember month safety campaign.

At the event, the monarch warned drivers plying the Mile 2-Badagry expressway to desist from using worn-out tyres when driving to save lives and property.

Oba Ashafa said the campaign with the theme: Right to life, is apt stressing that road users should claim their life and not their right.

He said the use of exhausted tyres had been a major contributor to road crashes in the country.

On his part, the Unit Commander 2.112 of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Iba-Ijanikin, Obagbemiro Adeyemi, noted that safety on the highways during the ember months was a collective responsibility of all road users.

He said: ‘‘Safety on our roads required our collective responsibilities and we all have one role or the other to play in reducing crashes.”

Adeyemi however, implored all road users to be cautious as there would be increase of vehicular movements during the months.

He warned drivers, particularly commercial bus drivers to desist from overloading and speeding to ensure safety of passengers.

He also advised road users to watch carefully before entering main and minor roads to minimize accidents.

“People should ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before embarking on any journey. Vehicle owners should also desist from driving under the influence of alcohol and avoid speeding to stay alive. The higher the speed the higher will be the crash which will also increase the number of causalities,”  he said.
