In an effort to curb bullying and improve safety and security in schools, the Lagos State government through the State Safety Commission (LSSC) has trained over 5000 teachers while carrying out 300 safety audits across schools in the state.
This is just as the state under the Safe School Lagos (SSLAG) initiative has concluded plans to recognise schools that have shown relevant commitments to the SSLAG framework, implemented innovative strategies to create a safe and welcoming school environment for students, staff and visitors.
Speaking at a briefing yesterday, the Lead Resource Person for Safe School Lagos, Dr. Bisi Esuruoso said there was the need to create a safe school environment where bullying and other violent practices were eradicated.
According to her, the majority of the students are damaged because of bullying even as she said teachers bullying a child is a threat to them.

“We are looking at interactions within the school environment, the appropriateness of the curriculum and risk assessment of a lesson.
“When a class is being distracted, it is not safe for the rest of the other children. We are also looking at the environment. It is not about interfering with the subject knowledge,” she said.
The official noted that the greatest cause of safety infraction was as a result of lack of supervision during free periods, disclosing that this is no longer happening in Lagos schools as teachers have been mandated to intensify supervision during free periods.
“During lunch time or any free period, teachers must be on duty,” she said.
She said the Beacon of Safety Award Conference coming on September 26, 2023 convened by the Safe School Alliance “Will recognise schools that have shown relevant commitments to the SSLAG framework, implementing innovative strategies to create a safe and welcoming school environment for students, staff, and visitors.
“Stakeholders such as individuals and organisations have been selected to be rewarded with the BOS Safety Champion awards for demonstrating exceptional support to safety and security initiatives in schools or to members of the school communities.
