Lagos pledges scholarships for talented athletes

Disclosing this to sports writers, Special Assistant to Governor Babatunde Fashola on grassroots sports, Prince Wale Olagundoye, said the governor has urged all the Local Government Councils in the state to invest in the youths through the programme.

Grassroots sports gathered that such scholarships are aimed at encouraging other youths to take into sports and enable the beneficiaries to be able to combine education with sports without any stress.

According to Olagundoye, about six different sports (athletics, soccer/beach soccer, basketball, volleyball/ beach volleyball, boxing and table tennis) will be focused on in the first phase of the programme.

Olagundoye said the state government expects the programme to be a pool of sports talents from where the state’s future athletes will be come from.

He said the government believes that if all the local governments and development areas of the state invest in grassroots sports, the lost glory of the state in sports will soon be recovered, adding that the programme will equally benefit Nigeria as whole.

“We are not only planning to develop the athletes but trying to turn them into elite athletes, turn them into wholesome personalities-ambassadors for state and country and a role model for younger ones,” Olagundoye.
