The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has disclosed the command arrested five suspected kidnappers and five armed robbers in the last one week within the metropolis.
Owoseni, briefing journalists on Wednesday on the security situation in the state, said that two other armed robbery suspects died in different shootouts with the police.
He revealed that the robbers had engaged the police in a bloody shootout, during which both suspects were killed, while several others escaped with varying degrees of bullet wounds.
He also disclosed that four automatic rifles and about 21 live ammunitions, as well as five exotic cars were recovered from different gangs.
He said: “I want to say that the two robbers were not deliberately killed by the police, but rather they died in shootout with policemen.”
Owoseni said: “The robbers had engaged the policemen in the shootouts, during which two of them were gunned down. Those arrested and the exhibits would soon be charged to court.”
He promised that there would be an improved police presence in all parts of the metropolis. He appealed to members of the public to avail the police with useful information regarding criminal elements in their area, stressing that without the cooperation of the public, it may be difficult for the police to curb crime.
