Secondary school students in Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa and Lagos Island local government areas of Lagos State have kick-started the maiden renewable energy essay contest organized by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) and Skangix Development Limited.

At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NCF and Skangix Development Limited in Lagos, the NCF Director-General, Adeniyi Karunwi, said it is expedient to instil in the younger generations of Nigerians the idea of cultivating renewable energy such as sunlight, wind, waves and geothermal heat in order to preserve the environment.

According to Karunwi, the need to use renewable energy, transport or even total primary energy supply globally, has been motivated by global warming, ecological and economic concerns. He added that globally, about 30 nations, including Denmark, Sweden and China, have renewable energy contributing to over 20 per cent of their energy supplies.

The Managing Director, Skangix Development Limited, Sam Cocker, said the idea behind the introduction of essay competition among secondary school students came from a recent trip he had to the United States where students were already demonstrating their knowledge of renewable energy and the discipline that comes with it.
