The state Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun, who disclosed this during a chat with Oodua Trust said this was done to discourage open defecation into water bodies and solve the problem of electricity for such projects in the rural and river side communities in the state.

Balogun added that the outcome of the pilot solar powered communal toilet had to government’s decision for the provision of the technological option for more rural communities in the state before the end of this year.

Speaking on the progress made so far on rural water and sanitation since the advent of the Fashola administration three years ago, the commissioner explained that in 2009 alone, his ministry completed 110 projects. He said 65 communities were provided with small scale water schemes of various options.

Balogun stressed that six communities, Baiyeku in Ikorodu Local Government, Ilasan at Eti-Osa, Itokin in Epe, Seme and Ilogbo Eremi  in Badagry Local Government Area including Sekungba in Epe Local Government Area had their existing non-functional micro water schemes awarded for rehabilitation. “These micro water schemes are capable of producing 45,000 litres per run and are complemented with a pipe network of about 2km each,” he said.

The commissioner however, said the above achievements covered averagely about 10% of the communities in the state that required these facilities but noted that the response of the government to demands was based on letters of request received.
