Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong, has flagged-off the ‘grow literacy’ programme aimed at increasing citizens’ literacy level in the state.

The Governor who was represented by Plateau state Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mr. Alex Joseph Maigari flagged-off the programme which was organized by the state government and Read, Learn, and Grow Literacy Organization of Nigeria (RELEGON) at Jos National Museum.

Lalong said his administration is prepared to support the programme in order to fight the dwindling reading culture and also to position its citizens to work in the atmosphere of global competitiveness and to attain high degree of educational, scientific and technological breakthroughs.

In her remarks, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of RELEGON, Dr. Ijeoma G. Ayuba expressed her organization’s readiness to work with the government to promote literacy, reading culture, importance of reading, promote best global practices in school and to create a platform for the innovation and productivity through reading culture.

“The adult and youth literacy level based on the six geo-political zones: North East (30%); North West (31%), North Central (42%), South East (65%), South West (73%), and South-South (63%), therefore we need to do something to promote literacy level in the north.” She said.
