Lalong orders probe after death of poly student

Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State

One student of Plateau State Polytechnic has been confirmed killed during the protest by the students of the institution on Monday.

Mr. Dan Manjang, State Commissioner for Information and Communication, in a statement issued in Jos, said the deceased was killed by a stray bullet.

Daily Trust reported on Monday how the students of the institution blocked the main highway into the State from both the main campus and the Jos campus in protest against the commencement of an industrial action by the lecturers of the institution but were dispersed by police and personnel of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH).

On Monday, the OPSH’s spokesman,  Major Ishaku Takwa, denied the alleged shooting of the protesting students by their personnel, explaining that soldiers and other security personnel went to the scene of the protest and dismantled the roadblocks.

Manjang on Tuesday said the government regrettably received the sad news from the police of the death of one of the students who was said to have been hit by a stray bullet and taken to hospital for treatment but could not survive.
