Landscape architects urge government to prioritise land design

 They made the call in Abuja during the celebration of the World Landscape Architect Month and Launching of Advocacy Manual on the Environment.
 Speaking at the occasion, National President Society of Landscape Architects Mrs Deborah Wanya Nenchi said that the impact of Landscape Architects is yet to be appreciably felt due to lack of understanding by government and Nigerians on the activities of Land Scape Architects.  
“The government and citizenry are not aware of who should design outdoor spaces and places as landscape designs and contracts are not given to Landscape Architects to design or execute as is done in other countries of the world. I want to use this opportunity to emphasis that Landscape Architecture should be embraced by all as a profession of our time in the design of out- door spaces and places. At the moment, the profession is not found in the civil service scheme of service. There is the need to include this profession as appropriate. Graduates being produced at the moment are beginning to join the teaming unemployed professionals seeking an opportunity to positively express themselves and to practice.”
 She said that SLAN is collaborating with the FCT Parks and Recreation Department, by handling activities such as, park development and management, and recreational development, landscaping and beautification of the city.
“We will also engage in the designing of places such as parks, recreational grounds, ecological sites, corridors within the city and rural areas, residential areas, schools etc for a better environment,” she said.
