Nineteen people have so far been killed by Lassa fever in the last 14 weeks across the Bauchi State.
The state Deputy Governor, who doubles as the Chairman of the state’s Task force Response Committee of COVIDid-19 and Lassa fever, Senator Baba Tela, disclosed this on Thursday during a media update on Coronavirus and Lassa fever in Bauchi.
He said that the committee had followed up contact of about 48 persons, saying that those 48 persons have been confirmed positive of the diseases but are currently recovering well.
“We believe that those 48 patients that are currently under management will be able to recover.
“The most important thing to do about the Lassa fever now is the public awareness which we have since embarked upon telling the public what do to prevent it.
“We have been trying to enlighten families of the deceased persons who lost their relatives from Lassa fever that they should quickly inform authorities to help in handling the burial,” he said.
He decried the development wherein some people, especially families of the victims, were chasing health workers, who are trying to educate them not to touch the body of those who died from Lassa fever.
Meanwhile, Governor Bala Mohammed has approved the release of N25 million for the control of Lassa fever in the state.
