Mr. Akwashiki Awalaro, father of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, has endorsed Mr. Labaran Maku, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, for the June 20 Nasarawa North Senatorial by-election.
Awalaro said the endorsement was in line with his late son’s instruction to the family to support Maku to replace him at the National Assembly in the event of his death.
Speaking when he hosted Maku and his campaign team at his ancestral home in Angba-Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon LGA, Awalaro said the entire family would rally behind Maku in the upcoming by-election.
“My son, the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, told me and the entire family that if he died, we should support Mr. Labaran Maku to replace him in the Senate,” he said.
“He told us that Maku supported him during his campaigns, and that when he offered money to Maku, Maku rejected it and asked him to use it for projects in Nasarawa North communities.
“He said the only way to pay Maku back was for the family to support and vote for him to replace him at the National Assembly if he died. That is why we have decided to endorse Maku.”
The elder Akwashiki described Maku as a man of integrity with unquestionable character, expressing confidence that he would continue the good work his son started.
Mr. Anza Yunana Akwashiki, younger brother of the late senator, corroborated their father’s position.

He noted that their elder brother had explicitly told them that if he passed away, they should back Maku to sustain his legacy.

Responding, Maku promised to complete all projects initiated by the late senator if elected.

“By God’s grace, I will complete all the roads and other projects initiated by our late, distinguished Senator Godiya Akwashiki,” he said. “I assure you that all of his aides and staff will work with me if given the mandate. I am not coming to start afresh; I will continue from where he stopped and do more.”
