Mikel Merino scored in added time to lead Spain to a 1-0 win over Portugal in their 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 clash at the Dallas stadium.

The pulsating encounter between two Iberian neighbours was decided by Merino, a late substitute, as Spain continued their quest for a second World Cup trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo stated in the pre-match press conference that the tournament would be his last and hopes to win it, but Spain had other ideas despite Mikel Oryazabal missing when clean through on goal early in the first half.

Ronaldo also drew a smart save at the near post from Unai Simon, while Diogo Costa made a double save to ensure a goalless first half.

A cagey second half ensued between both sides until Merino sprang the offside trap to bury Ferran Torres’ through ball low into the net for the winner.

Victory continues Spain’s unbeaten record against Portugal in the World Cup, repeating their 1-0 win against the Selecao in 2010.

The Spaniards also recorded their fifth consecutive clean sheet at the 2026 World Cup.

Spain will face either the United States of America or Belgium in the last-eight round at the Los Angeles stadium on Friday, July 10.
