The North Central Zonal Directorate of Students’ Rights of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his prompt and decisive response to the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
In a statement released on Friday, LAWSAN’s Zonal Director of Students’ Rights, Marvellous Edwin Isreal, emphasized that the commendation is grounded in law, not charity.
The Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to life and prohibits its arbitrary deprivation. By acting decisively, the IGP fulfilled his constitutional obligation to hold law enforcement officers accountable for extrajudicial killings.
“The IGP’s response met the legal standards. This is what accountability looks like when it is genuine,” the statement read.
LAWSAN highlighted that ASP Usman’s actions violated not only national law but also Nigeria’s international human rights commitments, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The statement emphasized the importance of this moment for law students, noting that it demonstrates how institutions can face accountability. “You are witnessing why the law matters: not as text in a statute book, but as a living standard that real people invoke to demand real consequences for real wrongs,” the statement said.
LAWSAN commended the IGP’s swift, transparent, and constitutionally grounded response but stressed that the act itself remains a profound violation of human rights. “The commendation of the response and the condemnation of the act are both required. They are both true,” the statement added.
