The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has said the proposed National Learner Identity Number (NLIN) will curb examination malpractice and strengthen monitoring of students across Nigeria’s education system.

Speaking at the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) National Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja, themed “Transforming Education Through Data,” Alausa described the initiative as a major reform designed to improve transparency, planning and accountability in education.

He said the NLIN will enable the government to track every learner from enrollment to graduation and employment, regardless of relocation across states.

He explained that the system would prevent class manipulation, monitor academic progress and support better education planning.

Alausa said the initiative would also support employment opportunities for graduates by integrating entrepreneurship training into the education system and aligning students with relevant sectors after graduation.

He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s education sector through technology and data-driven policies.

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said reliable education data would strengthen child protection, girls’ education and support for vulnerable groups.

Also speaking, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stressed the importance of data-driven governance, noting that data had helped reduce inmate residual cases within correctional services.
