Our recent school trip to Xiajiang Village, organized by Zhejiang University of Science and Technology(ZUST) as part of the “Explore China” program, was more than just an educational experience; it was a deep dive into China’s rural revitalization. The program aims to provide students with opportunities to gain a better understanding of China, its rapid development, and the cultural roots that have driven it. Xiajiang Village, as part of this journey, serves as a shining example of rural revitalization.
The Beautiful Landscape and Village Life
As we approached Xiajiang, one of the first things that struck me was the breathtaking view of Qiandao Lake, which could be seen from the road leading to the village. Qiandao Lake, known for its crystal-clear waters and scenic islands, is one of the most famous tourist destinations in China. The river-like lake, with its serene beauty, once suffered from pollution, but today, it sparkles as a testament to the village’s remarkable transformation. The surrounding landscape, with its lush greenery and picturesque setting, seemed almost too perfect to be real. As we traveled, I could see the locals working diligently, whether in agriculture, handicrafts, or small businesses, all trying to make a better life. The village, though still rural, had taken on a modern yet traditional charm, drawing tourists from around the world. It’s no surprise that Xiajiang has been recognized as one of the best villages in the world, continuously attracting a stream of visitors curious to learn about its success.
President Xi Jinping’s Connection with Xiajiang
One of the most fascinating parts of the trip was learning about President Xi Jinping’s personal connection to Xiajiang. While he was the Secretary of Zhejiang Province, he visited the village many times, sometimes staying overnight and spending time interacting with the locals. This hands-on involvement allowed him to better understand the needs of the people and directly influence the rural revitalization policies that would change the face of this village. His commitment to rural development is not only reflected in the success of Xiajiang but also in the enduring spirit of community that now defines the area.
Cultural Heritage and Economic Growth
In addition to environmental improvements, Xiajiang has become a hub for cultural tourism. We visited the location where the famous Chinese film “My Country, My Home ” was filmed, a testament to the village’s deep cultural roots. The government’s support for tourism and business ventures has given the local people an opportunity to thrive economically. I learned that the government has provided various kinds of support, particularly financial assistance, to encourage entrepreneurs to establish businesses in the area. This initiative has helped create jobs and has made the village a model for rural economic growth.
A Remarkable Achievement
The level of development Xiajiang has achieved in such a short time is nothing short of remarkable. The village’s success can be attributed to the comprehensive approach the government took, focusing on environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and economic diversification. The village now stands as a beacon of how rural areas can modernize without losing their heritage, and it is a testament to the power of strategic planning and government support.
Personal Reflections and Future Aspirations
Witnessing Xiajiang’s transformation firsthand has been an eye-opening experience. The village’s success shows me the incredible potential that lies in rural areas, not just in China but everywhere. If given the opportunity, I would love to implement similar methods to support rural development in my home country, Nigeria. Through promoting sustainable growth, protecting cultural heritage, and supporting local businesses, I believe we can bring about similar positive changes for rural communities back home.
In conclusion, Xiajiang Village is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people and governments work together for the common good. The village’s transformation has not only improved the lives of its residents but has also become a source of inspiration for rural development around the world.
