Taking the Plunge: Why We Chose Playa del Carmen

It all started with a shared dream: me (Anna), my best friend Rose, and my boyfriend John wanted to learn how to scuba dive. While backpacking through Mexico, we kept hearing how incredible the underwater world around Playa del Carmen was—lush coral reefs, crystal-clear cenotes, and top-tier dive instructors. After checking around we found many options but Jaguar Divers stood out as they had a ton of great reviews, a reputation of putting a focus on safety and their own private pool. So we booked the course with them and our underwater adventure began.

Studying the Theory (Yes, There Was Homework!)

Before we ever dipped a toe in the water, Jaguar Divers sent us access to the SDI eLearning platform. It was surprisingly engaging. We worked through five chapters on everything from underwater physics to dive planning, equipment, and safety.

Each section ended with knowledge reviews, short quizzes that tested what we’d learned. We tackled them over tacos and laughed about who got what wrong. The best part? It made us feel prepared and confident for what came next.

Confined Water Sessions: From Nervous to Natural

Once in Playa, we met our instructors—Santi and Liz, co-founders of Jaguar Divers. From the get-go, they were incredibly professional and warm. Santi’s relaxed presence put us at ease, and Liz’s attention to detail made every explanation clear and reassuring.

We had two pool training sessions in a quiet location just outside town. We practiced skills like:

• Clearing a flooded mask 
• Recovering a lost regulator 
• Buoyancy control 
• Sharing air in an emergency 
• And many other safety techniques like disconnecting our BCD in case of an inflator malfunction or breathing from a free flowing second stage.  

There were a few hiccups—Rose panicked a bit with her mask, and John struggled to hover—but Santi and Liz never rushed us. They patiently walked us through everything until we mastered the skills and felt genuinely ready for open water.

Dive 1 & 2: Into the Magic of Casa Cenote

Our first open water dives were at Casa Cenote, a magical freshwater location that snakes through mangroves. As we descended, we saw the halocline—that shimmering layer where fresh and saltwater meet. It was like diving through a dream.

We swam past huge tarpons, watched crabs move across the sandy floor, and—believe it or not—saw a juvenile crocodile calmly resting under the mangrove roots. It was wild, peaceful, and beautiful all at once.

Dive 3 & 4: Exploring the Reefs of Playa del Carmen

Next up were two dives at the local reefs, just a short boat ride from the coast. The Caribbean was calm, warm, and incredibly blue.

Beneath the surface, we were greeted by vibrant marine life: schools of angelfish, parrotfish, coral gardens, and even a couple of stingrays gliding by. Every direction we looked was alive with color and motion. It was the perfect way to end our training.

A Word on Safety and Professionalism

Throughout every step, safety came first. From dive briefings and gear checks to practicing slow ascents and communication underwater, Santi and Liz made sure we always knew what we were doing and why. Their dedication and passion for diving—and for teaching—were clear.

From Students to Certified Divers

When we surfaced after our fourth dive, we were grinning from ear to ear. We did it—we were officially Open Water Divers! But more than that, we had just discovered a whole new world beneath the surface.
