In a statement signed yesterday by Amaka Agbaih, a principal officer at the council on behalf of the Deputy Director Press the NLAC, the NLAC said that it was indeed making impact in the decongestion of prisons.
 “Records have shown that the council has so far released quite a good number of inmates. It was therefore a celebration galore at Upper Area Court Karu where two of their clients namely Mr. Thaddeus Atoo and Godstime Achili were released by the Presiding Judge and in their excitement and in what they termed tears of joy, quickly granted interview to Legal Aid Council Press.” One of the freed inmate, 57 years-old Mr. Atoo Thaddeus denied ever committing the offence of rape for which he was held.
His words: “When I was suffering in Keffi Prison, I did not have anybody so one day the council lawyer came around for prison visitation and interviewed me and took up my matter. It was last year in 2012 and I have spent 1 year, six months and four days.
 “I want to thank my lawyer Barrister Adula, the Director-General Legal Aid council Mrs. Joy Bob-Manuel and the Federal Government of Nigeria for establishing the council to help the voiceless in the society. The Council is doing a good job and it’s God that will reward them.”
The other freed inmate, Godstime Achili  a 23 year old man was held for impersonation. He was arrested and taken to prison three months ago.
