The Ladies Empowering Ladies Initiative (LELI), in partnership with the Cultural Consulate of the Embassy of Iran, has organised an awareness programme for teenage girls on hygiene and women’s health at the Government Junior Secondary School, Kado, Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the President of LELI, Fauziyya Bintu Tauheed Abdullahi, said the programme was aimed at helping women and girls value themselves, saying, “This organisation was born out of empathy for other women, and we also extend a hand to the male counterparts. We do it to reach out to people so that they can value themselves.”
She thanked the Iranian Consulate for its support, noting: “We really appreciate the Iranian Consulate for giving us support. We want more of this to come so that we can reach out to the poor and to the needy.”
She explained that the initiative focused on knowledge rather than financial handouts, saying, “It’s not about empowerment as giving out money. Somebody who doesn’t have the knowledge to transfer to another person will not be able to take care of whatever he or she has. We’ve been able to achieve impacting knowledge on these kids on menstruation, and they displayed it, even during the interview, that they learned something very good.”
Medical experts from Iran and Nigeria delivered lectures on menstruation management, infection prevention and hygiene. Educational materials were distributed to encourage the girls to continue their studies.
The students expressed gratitude for the programme, with one of them, Nasha Globet, saying: “I have learned a lot today. May God bless them.”
Another student, Tina Michael, said she learned the importance of hygiene during menstruation, including bathing regularly.
Representing the school’s management, Enemali Roseline Ojonogecha described the initiative as “beautiful” and thanked Iran and LELI for choosing her school, urging that such programmes should not stop.
