LEMU, Dawah Front disburse Zakat to beneficiaries in Lagos, Ogun

The Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU) and Dawah Front of Nigeria have disbursed Zakat worth over N200 million to beneficiaries in Lagos and Ogun states.
Beneficiaries, who were screened based on their business needs, received cash support as well as empowerment tools, including laptops, motorcycles, industrial and manual sewing machines, refrigerators, grinding machines, laptop computers, generators, foodstuffs, and clothing materials aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Speaking at the 2026 Zakat Disbursement Programme organised by LEMU at the Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos, where N225 million zakat proceeds were distributed to over 400 beneficiaries, the Chief Imam, Dr Ridwan Jamiu, urged wealthy Muslims to prioritise their needy relatives, saying charity begins at home.
“If you have needy relatives such as uncles, aunts, cousins or siblings, they can receive your zakat,” he said.
However, he clarified that zakat cannot be given to direct dependents such as wives and children.
He said zakat purifies wealth and cleanses the soul from stinginess and doubt in Allah’s promise, while strengthening faith and trust in divine provision.
Chairman of the LEMU Zakat Committee, Yunus Olalekan Saliu, said more than 3,000 applications were received, but only about 400 beneficiaries were selected after a rigorous screening process.
In Ogun State, the Abeokuta chapter of Dawah Front of Nigeria, in collaboration with Amir Zakat Foundation, also distributed zakat worth N11.8 million to beneficiaries.
The National Coordinator of Dawah Front of Nigeria, Alhaji Musliudeen AbdulGafar, urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the items to grow their businesses and become financially stable enough to pay Zakat in future.
AbdulGafar, represented by the Deputy National Coordinator, Prof. Sheriffdeen Adewuyi encouraged Muslims to continue fulfilling the obligation of Zakat to support the less privileged.
The Abeokuta chapter coordinator, Dr Samsideen Ayanwale, commended Amir Zakat Foundation for contributing N7 million to the programme.
Chairman of the chapter’s Zakat Committee, Alhaji Surajudeen Fasola, said 73 applications were received, while 64 applicants participated in the screening exercise.
He said 50 beneficiaries were eventually selected, adding that 45 had already received their empowerment items, while arrangements were being finalised for the remaining beneficiaries.
