The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) was established in 2004, with a mandate to effectively manage and supervise all facilities in Abuja, with a view to retaining the aesthetics of the city. The council was recently repositioned to be more effective in service delivery. 

For the past two years, AMMC has been making efforts on the issue of time frame, submission of building plans, clearing and removal of all obstructions on the road corridors, removal of illegal structures and beautifying the city. 

The action of the council led to the removal of some illegal structures, imposition of fines and sanctions on developers. The council is also battling animal rearing and planting of crops in prohibited areas of the city.

But implementation of regulations which are aimed at guiding developers to comply with the FCT rules whenever they want to commence development on their projects are often met with stiff resistance and many other forms of challenges. Several court cases instituted against the council are indications that some developers do not like what it is doing. But despite these challenges, the council has continued to do its work diligently with a human face as directed by the FCT minister, Malam Mohammed Musa Bello. 

Hajiya Safiya Umar as coordinator of the council has been saddled with the responsibility of supervising the various departments. She is also concerned with the smooth implementation of all policy decisions of the council as well as directives given to her. 

The achievements of the council can now be easily seen by any visitor to Abuja. The efforts of the council to keep Abuja clean and admirable are  indeed paying off.
