LG chair impeached in Edo

The legislative arm of Egor Local Government in Edo State has impeached its chairman, Eghe Ogbemudia, over allegations of corruption, including the padding of the council’s supplementary budget.

The impeachment proceedings, led by Godwin Uwadiae Edigin, the Leader of the House and councillor representing Ward 3, took place outside the council.

Councillor Stella Osagioduwa Ogida, representing Ward 2, initiated the process by moving a motion of no confidence against the chairman, citing gross misconduct.

“We have uncovered the padding of the council’s supplementary budget to the tune of N1.7 billion,” Ogida said.

“The chairman did not involve the councillors in the preparation and approval of the council’s supplementary budget. After reviewing these actions and many other acts of gross misconduct, I want to pass a vote of no confidence on the chairman.”

The motion was seconded by Councillor Elliot Inneh, representing Ward 9. “We have a budget proposal amounting to N6.054 billion that was passed through this hallowed chamber, but we found out that the chairman, in connivance with the erstwhile House Leader, went behind our back and padded the budget to the tune of N7.896 billion,” Inneh stated.

A voice vote was called by the House Leader, with the majority of councillors supporting the motion. Subsequently, a motion for impeachment was moved and passed.

Meanwhile, the embattled council boss neither picked up calls nor responded to text messages sent to her phone seeking her reaction.
