Worried by the decline in reading among children, the Kaduna State branch of the National Library has organised a reading promotion campaign for selected schools in the state aimed at building a nation of readers. 

Speaking on the campaign, the National Librarian, Professor Chinwe Anunobi said the objective of the campaign is to encourage and revive the moribund reading culture among Nigerians . 

He said the campaign focuses on children in primary and secondary schools to sensitise, inform and educate them on reading culture. 

He added that the strategies of the campaign have been extended to some identified groups in the society such as expectant and nursing mothers, workers and travellers in motor parks, rural dwellers as well as inmates at correctional facilities. 

Head of the state branch, Mrs. Egwuibe Martina said the country’s educational system is still largely book-based and therefore, a child must have access to reading materials in the learning process. 

She stressed the need for a healthy reading habit to keep children craving for books among many competing alternatives. “The children’s library must dutifully assist the child to cultivate a good reading habit.
