A lightning strike has killed six children and injured four others in Dadiri-Tirgali village of Garum District, Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Reports from the area revealed that the tragic incident occurred on Sunday 19th July, 2026, during a heavy downpour.
The victims were said to be harvesting groundnuts, when the lightning struck.
An eyewitness told Daily Trust that the four survivors sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital Ganye.
According to him, the incident has thrown the community into mourning.
The victims include Abdulrahman Musa, 7; Aliyu Sule Maunde, 10; Jaafar Sule Maunde, 10; Bilkisu Jibrin Maunde, 20; Musa Ahmadu, 9; and Auwalu Nuhu, 11.
However, the four survivors receiving treatment at the hospital are Nasiru Abubakar, 7; Rilwanu Ahmadu, 9; Saadatu Isa, 35; as well as Hasiya Isa, 1 year 3 months old.
commenting on the development, Hon. Daniel Kamsobbi, the Chairman of Ganye Council, condoled the bereaved families, describing the situation as “a tragic moment for the people in Ganye and the Adamawa at large.”
Kamsobbi confirmed that six children died instantly and four others injured, adding that a mother and her child have been discharged after medical examination, saying the remaining two victims are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Kamsobbi said police and other security officials have been ordered to investigate the real cause of the tragedy, which would guide the council on the best sensitisation strategy to adopt for residents, who are majorly farmers.
“As a council, we have already escalated the police and law enforcement units to investigate the real cause of the tragedy whether it was natural phenomenon or human-induced so that we know the best approach we will adopt in sensitising our people.
“Even if it was caused by high cultural practices in the twenty-first century, we will be able to know how to engage our people for awareness and escalate it to the state through ALGON for impact in the entire state,” Kamsobbi emphasised.
Our correspondent reports that Ganye Local Government Area is widely regarded as one of the most fertile areas in Adamawa State, with year-round production of a wide range of agricultural crops through natural rainfall and irrigation farming, earning it the nickname, “the food basket of Adamawa State.”
