One of the lions in the zoological garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, attacked and killed a veterinarian, Olabode Olawuyi, on Monday.
The aggressive 9-year-old male lion attacked Olawuyi when he was feeding the animals.
Daily Trust learnt that Olawuyi had been taking care of lions since they were born at the zoo located within the OAU campus about 9 years ago.
But aggressive male lion attacked Olawuyi when he was feeding them and all efforts to rescue the veterinarian from the lion failed.
The veterinarian was rushed to hospital where the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, confirmed him dead.
The Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, while confirming the incident said the lion was euthanized immediately.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
Meanwhile, the university management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and takes it.
