The Lions of Senegal and Atlas Lions of Morocco both claimed victories in the 2021 AFCON Last 16 matches to reach the quarter-finals.

Senegal, Morocco through to quarter-finals 

Senegal are through to the quarter-finals of AFCON after seeing off a brave Cape Verde at the Stade Kouekong, Bafoussam. 

Sadio Mane and Bamba Dieng were on the scoresheet for the tournament favourites as the game ended 2-0. 

Cape Verde, in their second-ever appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages, had Patrick Andrade shown a straight red card after 20 minutes, before goalkeeper Vozinha was also sent-off in the second-half after a heavy collision with Mane. 

Senegal were hugely underwhelming in the group stage but eventually finished top of Group B 

They scored only one goal, a 97th-minute penalty to win their opening game against Zimbabwe, before back-to-back goalless draws against Malawi and Guinea. 

Similarly, Morocco came from a goal down to defeat Malawi 2-1 at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaoundé. 

Malawi’s Gabadinho Mhango had opened the scoring in the 7th minute but Youssef En-Nesyri in the dying minutes of the first half for the Moroccans. 

Achraf Haskimi’s freekick in the 70th minute was enough to seal the win for Morocco. 

Senegal will now face the winner between Mali and Equatorial Guinea while Morocco will face the winner between Ivory Coast and Egypt on Sunday.
