Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman scored the opening goal for Atletico in their 3-2 loss to ten man Real Madrid in the Madrid derby on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old Nigerian international was his usual elements on the wing in the Spanish La Liga fixture, but Real staged a second half comeback though Vinicius Jr. brace, and a Federico Valverde strike to spoil Lookman’s party.

Both sides traded chances in the early exchanges of the feisty encounter, Valverde hit the post and Adriy Lunin stopped an Atletico chance before Lookman gave the visitors the lead when Lookman controlled a Julian flick before slotting into the net for 1-0 on 33 minutes.

Lookman becomes the first Nigerian player to score in the Madrid derby with his second La Liga goal.

Los Colchoneros took the lead into the halftime break, but Real scored twice in the first ten minutes to take the lead. Brahim Diaz was fouled in the box for Vinicius Jr. to score his first ever goal against Atletico from the penalty spot on 52 minutes, before Valverde buried a low strike into the net for 2-1 three minutes later.

A complacent Real Madrid surrendered their lead on 66 minutes as Nahuel Molina’s 25 yards strike flew into the top corner for 2-2.

Vinicius completed his brace with a well placed curling shot into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area to put Real back in the lead on 72 minutes.

A red card for Valverde on 77 minutes for dangerous tackle led to a tense end to the match, but Lunin made multiple saves to end Atletico’s six-match unbeaten run in the Madrid derby.

Second placed Real cut the lead of table-toppers Barcelona to four points, while Atletico remain in fourth place.
