Lopsided appointments: I subjected myself to investigation – FCT CJ

The new unit, which is to handle public complaints and petitions against the staff of the FCT judiciary, received its first petition on the alleged lopsided appointments against the chief judge himself in August.
Justice Bukar, who spoke during the commemoration of the New Legal Year of the court on Thursday, said that by submitting to be probed, he demonstrated that no member of staff of the judiciary will be above the jurisdiction of the unit.
“Incidentally, the first petition received by the ombudsman was made against me and I subjected myself to their jurisdiction in order to give them the necessary impetus to do their duty and gave them full powers to investigate the allegation of ‘ethnic cleansing’ that was made against me,” he said.
The chief judge said he was determined to create a merit-based system in the recruitment and promotion of personnel in the FCT judiciary.
The chief judge also decried the dwindling financial allocation to the judiciary
In his remarks, Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Muhammed, praised the judiciary for its landmark judgments including affirming the powers of the minister to allocate lands and the ‘Park-and-Pay Policy.’
“The nation will continue to rely on your creative judicial interventions, especially, as we prepare for the general elections. This also includes our efforts to tackle the problems of insecurity, corruption, human trafficking, abuse of the Abuja Master Plan and prison congestion,” he said.
