Nigeria’s lottery industry contributed over N200 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023, said the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

He disclosed this in Abuja during the launch of an autobiography titled “Mr Lottery: The Story of Lanre Gbajabiamila @ 60”, authored by Lanre Gbajabiamila, Director-General of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC).

The speaker, represented by his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, commended Gbajabiamila for transforming the lottery industry into a significant contributor to national development.

“Lanre Gbajabiamila has not only redefined the lottery industry but also made remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s economy. His dedication to innovation and transparency has elevated the sector from obscurity to a major economic player,” Abbas said.

He described Gbajabiamila’s career as a model of resilience and visionary leadership, emphasising his efforts in turning the lottery industry into a platform for community empowerment and opportunity creation.

Under Gbajabiamila’s leadership, the NLRC implemented reforms that boosted internal revenue generation from N200 million to billions of naira annually, significantly enhancing the sector’s economic impact.

Gbajabiamila urged policymakers and investors to recognise the lottery sector’s capacity for sustainable revenue generation and job creation, highlighting its potential to contribute even more to Nigeria’s economy.

Reflecting on the book’s theme, Gbajabiamila shared his motivation for chronicling his experiences, saying “I wondered if people would want to read about me, but I realised my story is intertwined with the growth of an industry with immense potential for our nation. This book is not just my story-it’s about the opportunities we can create together.”
