Lots of women in Nigeria are now embracing the new trend which is wearing or cutting their hair short.  Some women wear their hair short for various reasons; some prefer their hair short for convenience while others say they went into it because they think it is fashionable.
In the past, a lot of women wore their long hair and they found it very stylish, calling it “afro”, they used all sorts of products to keep their hair long, curly, shiny and neat.
Some African men encourage their partners to keep their hair long, as a sign of their beauty.
Nowadays, lots of people have ditched their long curls, braids, attachment for the low cut hairstyle. Most women believe that keeping long hair is a waste of time and energy, and they think the low cut makes them look smarter and takes less stress in taking care of, a train of thought that is more popular in the southern, western and eastern parts of the country.
In the North, most young girls still wear their hair long and shiny.
There are different types of low cut but the one that is worn mostly by women is called the Anita Baker hairstyle.
These low cut hairstyles are also very cheap to maintain compared to the long hair and it can be styled beautifully with little or no professional help.
“I can cut my hair myself and I do not need any special person to get it done for me” an online reporter wrote while sharing her opinion on the hairstyle.
Juliet Peters, a student at Bingham University Nasarawa, said, she prefers keeping the low cut hairstyle especially the Anita Baker style because she believes it is makes her look unique, classy and also younger.
She further stated that keeping her hair short is cheaper as she is unable to afford the extra money to keep her long hair because she is a student.
Habibat Ibraheem, a teacher at a primary school, said that she prefers the low cut because it is more convenient and makes her look smarter. She added that as a teacher she needs to be smart and also look the part, “I also love the hairstyle because I’m not cutting my entire hair so I could also plait any hairstyle I want.”
Hajarah Lawal, a student at the University of Lagos said that although she does not wear the hairstyle, she likes it because the heat in Nigeria is too much and the long hair also contributes to the heat, adding that she would soon cut her hair.
Other people have different opinion about this hairstyle. An online reader Zaynab Ibrahim says she detests the hairstyle because people who keep this hairstyle tend to be fierce and harsh.
According to Sayeed Hauwa “not everyone can keep this hairstyle; it does not fit everybody. An ugly woman can never pull off this up-do because it would look very bad on her.”
A lawyer, Abdullahi Ibrahim, says he does not like the hair style because most women look stern in it, and it scares away men but that the long hair makes a woman look friendly, approachable and accommodating.
Abdulmalik Sadiq, a corps member, says he believes that the hair is a gift from God and no one should cut it off.
