Super Falcons were eliminated from the 2008 Africa Women Championship by Equatorial Guinea who went on to win the championship as host. Falcons were beaten 0-1 at the semi-final stage.
Speaking to Trustsports yesterday on phone, Mabo said Falcons must do everything humanly possible to beat their opponents because anything short of that will be an indication that Equatorial Guinea has become a jinx.
He said he was personally in Guinea where a star studded Falcons team was beaten by the host of the 2008 edition of the Africa Women Championship.
Mabo said he was surprised that even the presence of a player like current leading goal scorer in South Africa, perpetual Nkwocha could not stop the Equatorial Guinea girls from running away with victory.
The former Falcons coach noted that this time around, the team should not take anything for granted as he said they must attack their opponents from the blast of the whistle to the end of the match.
According to him, in as much as Falcons have since qualified for the 2011 FIFA Women World Cup in Germany, they have to win today’s match so as to reclaim their rightful position in African female football.
He reiterated that as defending champions, Equatorial Guinea will not like to surrender their title without a fight but if the Falcons can put their acts together, they will come out tops.
Mabo said: “The team must approach today’s match with all seriousness because a defeat today in the hands of Equatorial Guinea will be a strong indication that we are jinxed by that country. It was the same country that dethroned us in 2008. They must find a way to take revenge.
“I was personally in Equatorial Guinea at the 2008 African Women Championship and I saw what happened. We had quality players and they played well but we still lost. The present coaches, including Perpetual Nkwocha were there but we lost”.
