Macmillan commits N80m to literary appreciation in 8 years

He said that the amount went into the sponsorship of various literary activities.According to him, Macmillan set up a Literary Committee in 1999 as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to improve the reading culture of Nigerians.

The committee has a former Minister of Education, Prof. Babs Fafunwa as chairman and Chief Francesca Emanuel as vice-chairman.Babayemi further said that Macmillan had, for five years running, organised  “Youth Literary Day” and also introduced the “Yoruba Literary Day”  two years ago.

He said that a “Literary Night’’ was instituted seven years ago with the the 2009 edition slated to hold in Lagos on Nov. 24.The consultant said the event would feature oral presentation of literary works by Nigerian writers, including Prof. Wole Soyinka and Prof. Chinua Achebe.

Others whose works are expected to feature during the event are Cyprian Ekwensi, Femi Osofisan, Ben Okri, Chima  Adichie, Promise Ugochukwu, Ogaga Ifowodo and Ayeola Mabiaku.

Some resource persons expected during the event are Odia Ofeimum and Joke Silva, he said.“ The Literary Night is basically an adult programme and it is not competitive. The emphasis is on oral interpretation of works by skilled readers,’’ he said. (NAN)
