He told Daily Trust this at the National Hospital Abuja, when he came to ascertain the condition of the victims of the incident.

He however said there were still compiling casualty figures and could not give an estimate of the total number of fatalities and injured. He also said that three NEMA staff who were involved in an auto accident while transferring some wounded victims were to be transferred from the National Hospital to the State House Clinic.

Eyewitnesses at the National Hospital report a corpse count of at least 12.

A high impact explosive device was detonated around 8:30am this morning at St. Theresa Church in Madalla, Suleja Local Government Area of Niger state.

The explosion left a crater in the middle of the road and destroyed the church and shops on the opposite side of the road.

At least 12 people were earlier confirmed dead by both the state police commissioner, Ibrahim Maishanu and NEMA’s spokesperson, Yushau Shuaibu. However, eyewitnesses say the fatality figures are much higher.

Shuaibu also said the figures are likely going to increase significantly as rescue efforts continue and more victims are evacuated.

Daily Trust’s Adebayo Ademola reported also that 8 casualties with varying degrees of injuries were taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

Among these casualties are four women and two teenagers who are all unconscious and two men who are in critical condition but conscious.
