The Nigerian Army has arrested 12 individuals linked to acts of terrorism allegedly carried out by a breakaway faction of Boko Haram known as Mahmuda.
The group has been operating in the Kainji Lake National Park, which spans parts of Kwara and Niger states.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General Obinna Onubogu, disclosed this during a visit to military camps in Kaiama and Baruten local government areas of Kwara State. The visit was aimed at assessing troop welfare and receiving operational updates.
Onubogu said the suspects were arrested during a series of raids across the park and surrounding border communities.

He said two of the arrested individuals were confirmed members of the armed group, while the rest are believed to be accomplices.
“The counter-insurgency operation, codenamed ‘Park Strike Four,’ is aimed at flushing out terrorists and criminal elements from the Kainji Lake National Park,” he said.
He added that troops have combed over 90 kilometres of forest terrain, from Kemanji deep into the park, where they have now established a firm operational base.
It would be recalled that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, had earlier given a one-month ultimatum to clear the park of terrorists and bandits. In compliance, the 2 Division has intensified operations across the affected border communities.
