Maiduguri flood: Dantata donates N1.5bn, NEDC N3bn to victims

Elder statesman and business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, has donated N1.5 billion to victims of the flood that ravaged parts of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Dantata made the donation when he led a delegation from Kano to the government house in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

He extended his condolences to Governor Babagana Zulum, the government and people of the state, especially those who lost their loved ones to the flood.

Dantata, 96, expressed concern over the deterioration of the economy and urged the elite and political leaders to repent and fear Allah in their dealings.

He also prayed for the peace and harmony of Borno State and Nigeria.

Responding, Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to the elder statesman for his compassionate visit, acknowledging that it serves as a powerful beacon of hope and solidarity during the trying times.

“The people of Borno deeply appreciate this show of humanity by a 96-year-old to visit us. Let me say it, our Baba has donated the sum of N1.5 billion to support the flood victims. May Allah bless and reward you with Aljannah. Mun gode, Baba,” Zulum said.

The development came after Dantata’s nephew, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, also made an N1 billion donation to the flood victims.

Also, the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) has contributed N3 billion to support small-scale businesses in Borno State. In addition, the United Nations has donated $6 million to aid the flood victims.

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, approved a donation of N175 million and relief materials to aid victims of the flood disaster in Maiduguri.

This includes N100 million for the Borno State Government, N50 million for Taraba State indigenes living in Maiduguri, and N25 million for the Borno Emirate Council.

A delegation from the House of Representatives, led by Ado Doguwa (APC, Kano), announced a donation of N100 million. Senators have also contributed a total of N74 million to support the victims.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, who led a group of senators to Maiduguri on Tuesday, disclosed that each of the 108 senators would contribute N500,000, amounting to N54 million.

He personally pledged N10 million. Additionally, the Northern Senators Forum has donated N10 million, bringing the total contributions from the Senate to N74 million.

Borno dep gov, Ndume, emirs, others donate N210m

Deputy Governor of Borno State, Hon Umar Kadafur and Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume led a delegation of southern Borno people to visit Governor Zulum and the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi.

Senator Ndume (APC, Borno South) announced a donation of N210 million from Southern Borno people, including emirs, former deputy governors, lawmakers and businessmen.

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who was also a former military governor of old Borno, Brig-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) said in Maiduguri that he facilitated the donation of high-yield fertilizers worth N120m from a company to the state government for distribution to affected farmers.

Similarly, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in last year’s election, Peter Obi, who led the party’s delegation to Maiduguri, said the team made a donation of N50m to the emergency relief fund of the state government.
