Mainstream Energy launches initiative to reduce grid collapses

Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), operator of the Kainji Hydro Power Plant, Jebba Hydro Power Plant, and Zungeru Hydro Power Plant, has launched a sector-wide technical training programme aimed at accelerating the integration of power generation companies into Nigeria’s new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS).

The initiative is designed to support compliance with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Order No. NERC/2024/057 on the mandatory integration of all grid-connected generating units into the national SCADA/EMS platform.

The programme also aligns with the June 2025 directive issued by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which emphasized the urgent need for real-time visibility and automated dispatch coordination across Nigeria’s electricity grid.

Speaking during the training programme held at the Mainstream Academy in Kainji, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Engr. A. B. Mohammed, stressed that the integration of generating units into the national SCADA system is no longer optional but a critical operational necessity.

According to him, the power sector is becoming increasingly dynamic, making accurate visibility of generation assets and rapid operational response essential for ensuring grid stability and secure system management.

He explained that initiatives such as the MESL-led training programme are vital because they help build the technical capacity needed for generation companies to comply with regulatory obligations while also contributing to improved reliability and resilience of the national grid.

The training programme is being delivered through the Mainstream Academy, MESL’s dedicated learning and innovation centre for power sector professionals. The academy is leveraging the company’s operational expertise and technical infrastructure to strengthen sector-wide knowledge and implementation capabilities.

Participants in the programme received intensive training in key areas including SCADA system architecture, Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) configuration, cybersecurity protocols, operational communication systems, and real-time data exchange with the National Control Centre.

The Executive Director of Corporate Services at MESL and founder of the academy, Usman Muhammad Umar, said the programme was conceived in direct response to recent regulatory directives requiring all grid-connected generation companies to fully integrate into the national SCADA and EMS systems.

He noted that the regulatory push is aimed at improving grid visibility, strengthening operational coordination, and enhancing overall national grid management.

According to Umar, MESL’s goal is not only to ensure its own compliance but also to support the broader power generation sector by equipping operators with the technical skills, systems knowledge, and operational readiness required for full SCADA integration.

He added that the initiative is part of efforts to support the development of a smarter, more resilient, and more dependable national electricity grid capable of meeting Nigeria’s growing industrial and economic aspirations.

In his closing remarks, Engr. Mohammed urged all generation companies that have not yet achieved full SCADA integration compliance to take immediate action. He emphasized that compliance is in the collective interest of the Nigerian power industry and remains fundamental to achieving a coordinated, stable, and efficient electricity system.

He further stated that progress within the power sector depends heavily on the willingness of operators to align with modern operational standards required for effective grid management and national system stability.

The NISO boss also reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve operational discipline, strengthen grid reliability, and enhance the long-term stability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

According to him, sustained collaboration between regulators, generation companies, and technical stakeholders will be critical to building a stronger and more dependable electricity grid capable of supporting national growth and development.
