The National Assembly has been urged to amend the constitution to make first degree a minimum qualification for Presidential candidates instead of school certificate.
Expert in Media law, Ethics and Strategic Communication, Prof Nsikan Senam stated that having a professional as President is the first step for Nigeria to experience meaningful development.
Speaking on Tuesday in Uyo as the 127 Inaugural lecturer of the University of Uyo on the topic, “Professionalism”, Senam argued that the disregard for professionalism was responsible for corruption and the unethical things plaguing the nation.
The Professor of Media law, Ethics and Strategic Communication, Department of Strategic and Corporate Communication, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Uniuyo, said making a professional President of Nigeria would instill professional consciousness in the nation that would checkmate incompetence, mediocrity, crime, lawlessness, corruption and other sharp practices.
“If Nigeria must experience meaningful development, high regard for professionalism is imperative. The corrupt and sharp practices that are plaguing our nation today are traceable to lack of regard for professionalism.
“The National Assembly should amend the 1999 Constitution to make a person wishing to contest for the office of President to be a graduate or respected professional before being qualified to contest Presidential election,” he stated.
He encouraged government at all levels and employers of labour to encourage and sponsor their employees to engage in reasonable self-development, and on-the-job training to update their knowledge and skill to align with time and evolving professional demands.
