Now that a new administration is in place in Gombe, it is noteworthy that it has set out not only to consolidate on these projects but add to the achievements of the previous administrations. As the state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwanmbo is confronting the problems on his turf; I would like to make a call on the lady beside him as well. She is Hajiya Ummu Adama I. Dankwanmbo, wife of Gombe State governor.
It is worthy of note that Hajiyah Ummu would be the first in Gombe State to enter the Government House with an array of educational qualifications and solid experience in management of human and material resources in her CV.
Most assuring to the people of Gombe is the fact that she has demonstrated what she would do to help her husband transform the state and also better the lot of the people in her own way. She gave this indication when she said she was going to do something about the plight of the physically challenged in the state.
For anybody familiar with Gombe, the plight of the physically challenged is something to worry about. With many of them unable to sustain themselves and begging for alms, they have become a source of worry as their population has continued to increase. They are left to their plights while children born into the care of such parents hardly know or get to realize what they live for.
So many people have expressed their concern but very little has been done to address this problem. Hopefully, now that this governor’s wife has resolved to look into the problem, we can only hope she has genuinely moved to address a very vital human problem which will add to the socioeconomic growth of the state through her high level contacts and strong determination.
A little insight into the Gombe First Lady’s biography as obtained from the media might add to our confidence of her capability to deliver on her promise. Born in Jos in 1969, she was enrolled at the Corona Primary School, Bukuru, Plateau State between 1975 and 1981.
From there she proceeded to a unity School- Federal Government College Jos where she completed her secondary education in 1986. At a time when many parents were satisfied with having a Girl-Child get married after college, her father who was the Retired Director and acting permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Mines and Power decided that she should further her education.
Thereafter, she got admission immediately into the University of Maiduguri to study Business Management, she came out with a Bsc in 1990 and got married to the present governor of Gombe state His Excellency, Alh. Ibrahim H. Dankwanbo FCA, OON.
Hajiya Adama not satisfied with being a full time Housewife started working in the present Union Bank Plc Iganmu Lagos in 1992 and she served the bank as a senior Manager until her resignation in 2008. Along the line she also went back to the University to acquire an MBA at The University of Jos between 2001-2003.
This pursuit of quality education stands her out among her equals and portrays her as a contemporary First Lady in present times. She is a well traveled, educated and experienced administrator and it is hoped that she would use this wide contact to attract international donor agencies to her state to invest in Girl-Child education and to fight maternal mortality as well.
With her experience and education, she should be able to expose the state to the international communities and also encourage more women to pursue quality education. She no doubt stands out as a good example to her equals therefore, should use the advantage of her public status to take Gombe and the women of the state to greater heights.
