Prof  Temitope Alonge has said it is important to make hospitals welcoming to patients rather than where they feel death on arrival .

Speaking during the maiden International Conference on Hospital Management and Administration (ICOHMA), he said those working in hospitals should be properly trained and understand that they should play good host to their guests.

“Embrace hospitality as a good host. When you walk into  good hospitals they have good structures, and the environment is very inviting. Anyone that goes in there seeing the environment knows that he or she  should get well before leaving otherwise he or she may not get well elsewhere. And so the colour mix and everything are very inviting,” he said.

He also advised hospitals to imbibe the principle of a Muslim hospital which attended to everyone regardless of  status , race or faith. “It doesn’t matter who you are whether you are a Muslim, Christian or Buddhist, whether you are black, white, woman, man, children or adult, rich or poor. It is a principle we must imbibe,” he said.

Prof Alonge also said other ways to have functional hospitals is to ensure that no acute case is turned back, having a  rehabilitation unit , embracing and implementing clinical governance, and institutionalizing public private partnership among others.

Dr Godswill C. Okara, Director Laboratory Services, Dr. Hassan’s Hospital and Diagnostics Centre Abuja in his paper titled ‘Building the desired synergy between healthcare professionals for efficient healthcare delivery’ said professional and bureaucratic leaders should exercise the will to implement and operationalize the ideas that bring about synergy between  healthcare professionals.

“That will naturally lead to efficient and effective healthcare delivery system, that is patient-focused and draws its strength from a formidable team of professional players that celebrate each other in our country and continent,” he said.
