Forty–eight people have reportedly died in the last one month following an outbreak of malaria in Gandu, Sokoto North Local Government area of Sokoto state.

The deaths were said to have been recorded out of the 180 patients who were hospitalized in the hospital during the period. 

Officer in Charge of the Kofar Kade Clinic, Mrs Rabi Ahmed Gandi who disclosed this said the situation had been brought under control.

She stated: ” The problem had hitherto reached an epidemic level, although it had subsided now.”

Gandi who was speaking while receiving the second consignment of free anti-malarial drugs from the state government, attributed the problem to the contamination of the environment due to the prevalence of toxic refuse heaps.

She however lauded the rapid intervention of the state government which she noted facilitated in bringing the situation under control.

Commissioner for Health, Sokoto state. Dr Balarabe Kakale, said necessary steps have been taken to address the situation.

Kakale added that Sanitary Inspectors had been deployed to the affected areas to help in the clean up and that the Ministry had commenced fumigation exercise against mosquitoes.
