Malawi has withdrawn its recognition of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), the country’s Foreign Minister, Francis Kasaila has said.

“The Republic of Malawi has decided to withdraw its recognition of the SADR, which it recognized on March 6, 2014, and to maintain a neutral position vis-à-vis the regional Sahara conflict”, Kasaila told reporters after meeting with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita.

“Our country wants to make a positive contribution to the UN process by maintaining a neutral position without pre-judging its outcome”, he said.

Malawi’s Foreign Minister also expressed his wish that “this position of neutrality and support for the UN process will send a strong signal to all the parties concerned in favour of a solution to this long-standing regional conflict”.
