Defending champions, including Jos Malcomines, Katsina Kangiwa and Minna Bago, are set for thrilling title defences as the 2026 Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament gallops off this weekend at the prestigious GRA Polo Ground in the Garden City.

The tournament, themed “United by the Game,” promises high-octane action as the title holders, led by the Jos-based polo giants who clinched the high-goal trophy last year, arrive in Port Harcourt determined to retain their crowns and extend their dominance in the Niger Delta polo circuit.

Regarded as the biggest sporting attraction and the foremost social event in the region, the 2026 edition will also serve as a special memorial, marking 20 years since the passing of former club president and polo icon, Roland Cookey-Gam.

Speaking at a media briefing, President of the Port Harcourt Polo Club, Prince Henry Agbodjan, said the tournament is designed to promote unity and inclusiveness, while continuing to deliver significant economic benefits to Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta.

“Polo embodies diversity, unity, equity and inclusiveness,” Agbodjan said. “This year’s tournament also honours one of our own, Roland Cookey-Gam, whose contributions to polo remain invaluable.”

Captain of the club, Dr. Ikenna Nebolisa, confirmed that players from Iran, Mexico, England and Argentina, alongside teams from Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Jos, will feature in the weeklong fiesta, which will also offer rich social and entertainment activities to usher in the New Year.
