Wellbeing Foundation Africa has opened a fortnightly antenatal education programme, called #MamaCare, at the Ikeja military cantonment in Lagos.
More than 30 expectant parents, spanning their first, second and third trimesters, attended the first day of class to learn birthing, antenatal nutrition, caring for an infant and dealing with pregnancy anaemia.
“Education is the strongest safeguard for expectant mothers and children,” said Wellbeing founder Toyin Saraki.
“These programmes empower women to make informed decisions in the interests of both herself and her child.”
Ikeja Cantonment is the third health centre to get Mamacare, after two others in Lagos and three more in Ilorin.
The foundation hopes to expand its #MamaCare classes to Abuja soon, with future hopes to span West Africa.
